Sketchbook: the Gynatar

Designing the Gynatar

They were a set of seven ornate constructs that served the Witch of Tyrrus as bodyguards, agents, and generals. For a long time there was speculation about what exactly they were: animated suits of armor, mechanical automatons or golems. In reality it was a mixture of all of the above, with the peculiarity that they were all governed by the same intellect. This meant that every time the heroes managed to destroy one of them, her spirit immediately passed into the body of her sisters, who became more clever and dangerous.

Although all seven were built at the same time, each one had a unique appearance. The designs were a variation of the same elements: a tall metal armored body with ornaments of leather, ivory and precious materials. The armor-shaped pieces had a blue and lavender flame motif, while the rest were decorated with more muted filigree. Their faces were ivory, with empty, sinister-looking eyes. All of the Gynatar wore pointed helms with an eye on their foreheads and roaring jaws, representing their role as enforcers and emissaries of Mirmándula, the Witch of Tyrrus. As seen in the images, the style of the helmet could vary greatly, as is the case with the one that incorporates a mask-shaped visor.

Compared to the archaic design of the armor, the Gynatar were equipped with modern-style halberds, so large and heavy that only they were capable of wielding them.
